Golf rounds out season, takes fifth at state
October 26, 2014
The girls golf team competed at the Topeka Country Club Monday and took fifth in the state tournament. The team collectively shot a 369 with seniors Kylie and Kelsey McCarthy shooting 86 to tie for 10th, freshman Macie Myers shooting 89 to take 16th, freshman Katie Ochoa shooting a 108, freshman Delaney Wisdom shooting 112 and freshman Isabella Hager shooting 113.
Kylie and Kelsey tied with two other girls from different schools and went to a play off for tenth. A play-off starts with all the people who were tied teeing off from the first whole and whoever shoots the lowest on the hole wins the play-off. If there were a tie the two who tied would continue on to the next hole until one player shot lower. One of the girls from the other schools won the play-off.
“It was kind of nerve racking for me because I’ve never been in a play-off before and I was hoping to do better than I did,” Kelsey said. “I kind of wished it would have just been Kylie and me in the play-off, I think it would’ve been so much fun.”
The team played strong despite the difficulty of the course.
“There were trees everywhere on both sides of the fairway, and once you’re in there the only option is to take your medicine and punch back out,” Head Coach Chris George said. “I think we made smart decisions for the most part, but we just got into the trees too much for us to be a contender today.”
The tournament also marked the first visit to state for the four freshmen on Varsity.
“I’m really proud of my little freshmen who for them being at state for their first time they honestly didn’t play that bad for the course that we played at because there were a lot of high numbers,” Kylie said.
The freshmen played a big part on the team this year.
“This was a great experience for the four freshmen on the team,” George said. “I hope they reflect on this day when there is snow on the ground and make the most of their off season practice to get back here again next year.”
