Varsity tennis players played in Topeka at 9 a.m. on Tuesday for their Washburn Rural Invite meet.

In the last two days, Varsity has won two matches back to back.

Varsity played with Washburn Rural, Maize, Emporia and Derby. For this meet, it was an open seeded tournament, meaning there were no team scores.

Freshman Jill Harkin played one singles, junior Kayla Lei played one singles, and their teammates senior Joanna Park and sophomore Hannah Loub played one doubles as partners. Senior Kate McGee and freshman Maura Wiens played one doubles as partners.

“Our Varsity handled longer matches and back to back competitions in two days very well,” head coach Tony Ingram said. “I was proud [of] how they competed for playing six matches in less than 24 hours.”

Harkin placed first (3-0), Lei placed second (2-1), Park and Loub placed third (2-1) and McGee and Wiens placed first (3-0)

“Starting off with a winning streak has helped me gain a lot of confidence,” Harkin said. “Winning as an individual is really important to me but I love knowing that I am helping out the team when I win singles matches.”

Lei finished the day by playing in the championship match. The first two matches were less competitive for McGee and Wiens, but McGee carried on for her doubles team and scored herself and her partner first place.

“Our whole team is super strong this year,” Wiens said. “We definitely have stuff to work on, but I think we are all going to keep doing really well this season.”

Varsity tennis will play their next match next on September 30 at their Emporia Invitational at 9 a.m.
