The Manhattan High girls basketball team competed at the Mid-America Classic in Mcpherson, KS last weekend, finishing 7th.
The Lady Indians began the tournament against Shawnee Mission East and lost a tight battle 41-37. Despite the stout defensive performance, the offense struggled from three-point range for much of the game. The team’s close-game woes would continue in the second round, where they fell to Andover Central 52-49.
“Our last few games have been challenging,” senior forward Maxine Doering said. “But the fight was there, we just needed to execute down the stretch.”
The team bounced back emphatically in their final game, thrashing Wichita Northwest 54-28, improving their record to 8-5 on the season.
“Finishing out the weekend with a win at [MAC] is huge as we head into our matchup against Hayden Friday followed by multiple games next week,” Doering said. “We will see tough challenges and teams the rest of the season and we have to work together to get those wins.”
The Lady Indians are set to visit Hayden this Friday, followed by a two-game homestand next week against Washburn Rural and Topeka High.
