Manhattan Varsity softball has had an eventful April, setting them up with a 9-5 record currently, making them sixth in the West Regional.
Manhattan played McPherson on April 1 for a 1-6 loss. Later that evening Manhattan won their game over Great Bend for a score of 4-1. Softball then traveled to Lawrence Free State and lost 1-4. The next game was at Olathe North High, where they lost 5-15. On April 16, MHS won 7-6 over Hayden at home.
MHS hosted Emporia at Twin Oaks Complex last Friday. The first game was a tough match-up with Manhattan beating Emporia 1-0 with the lone point scored by senior Jaden McGee’s home run.
“Personally it was..we felt like we really needed to win because of Emporia,” sophomore Keylee Schartz said. “We just felt like we needed to win and we got in our heads the first game.”
The girls kept their focus into the second game against Emporia, ending up beating the Spartans 12-0 when McGee got a second home run.
“We were used to the pitchers,” freshman Gracyn Neitzel said. “They only had two and we faced them in the first game so we got a lot more comfortable hitting wise and our defense was good throughout both of the games.”
Manhattan plays next on Monday at Topeka High.
