After an excellent year of music, the 67th annual Grammy award ceremony on Feb. 2 was highly anticipated. With many big names such as Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar and Bruno Mars being nominated for numerous awards this year, this ceremony was bound to feature many brutal losses and many hype wins. However, nothing could’ve prepared me for what actually went down at the 2025 Grammys.
While there were many amazing artists up for the Best New Artist award, including Doechii, Teddy Swims, Benson Boone and Sabrina Carpenter to name a few, Chappell Roan took home the crown with an amazing winning speech as well. While there were many deserving nominees, I agree that Chappell Roan deserved the title. With how big her record “Good Luck, Babe!” became in the past few months and how she seemingly came out of nowhere, this was her year.
Unfortunately, Best New Artist is the only of the “big four” awards I agree with. While Kendrick’s “Not Like Us” is a great song, I personally wouldn’t have given him Record of the Year or Song of the Year. In my opinion, there were no songs that were truly everywhere like Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso” and Billie Eilish’s “BIRDS OF A FEATHER.” While these songs aren’t really my cup of tea, I was rooting for them purely because they defined the year. I was happy when “Not Like Us” won Record of the Year, even if that meant ruling out “Espresso” from winning, but in a year with such amazing music, “Not Like Us” also winning Song of the Year is infuriating.
When Kendrick Lamar walked up on that stage to accept Song of the Year, I still had hope for Billie Eilish or Taylor Swift to win something. They both had amazing albums and were truly the front runners for Album of the Year in my eyes. However, “Cowboy Carter” by Beyoncé taking home the win there was appalling to me. It’s not a bad album, but it is far from Beyoncé’s best work. I don’t care if she should’ve won Album of the Year for “Lemonade” in 2017 or “Renaissance” in 2023, that does not mean the Grammy’s should “owe her a win” by any means. “The Tortured Poets Department” by Taylor Swift and “HIT ME HARD AND SOFT” by Billie Eilish were the best albums up for nomination, and they hadn’t won anything else that night. They deserved the win.
After years of being disappointed in the Grammy results, I think I’ve finally had it. After “Eternal Sunshine” by Ariana Grande was snubbed from any awards this year, despite being one of, if not the best, albums of the year, to Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish having huge years and not being credited for them, what do the Grammys really mean now? I can’t take the Grammys seriously anymore.
