“Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires” actress Freya Skye has launched her long-awaited singing career after winning the Junior Eurovision Song Contest while representing the United Kingdom in 2022.
Her winning piece, “Lose My Head,” won the global public vote in the contest, and since then, Skye has remained in the public eye, releasing five more songs, with her most recent one releasing last Friday, Jan. 17.
“Lose My Head” is a catchy, dark, synth pop song that shows off her versatile vocal range. However, her newest song, “Can’t Fake It,” is a different style of pop.
“Can’t Fake It” is a catchy pop song about a current relationship that she feels stuck in. While she longs to break up because she “just can’t fake it,” she still cares about her partner and can’t decide how to end things. The song theme isn’t anything new, as most popular pop artists in today’s music sing about their love life or a feeling of longing for someone out of reach. The reason this song feels unique is it’s a “breakup” song where the “longing” described in the song is a longing to breakup, instead of a longing for more defined love or someone they can’t have, like most songs.
The music video is also fun to watch. Set in an office, Skye sings to the camera before breaking out in a choreographed dance skit with some of her coworkers. While dancing music videos have almost gone out of style, a dance pop breakup song like this one is a perfect choice for a dancing music video. I find myself wanting to get up and bust some moves with her.
My main gripe with this song is at times, the lyrics don’t feel unique. While they get the meaning of the song across very well and still require more thought than a straightforward message, on my first listen, I found myself predicting some of the words in the chorus or verses, making the lyrics seem unoriginal. While this helps it become an easy sing-along song, it feels like something is missing that prevents it from really cutting deeper.
Overall, I enjoyed this song. While I don’t think it’s a perfect 10/10, I think it’s a solid song that will help elevate this new singer at the start of her career. I found myself bopping my head and replaying this song over and over again, which I think is a really good sign. I recommend going to Skye’s YouTube channel and checking out “Can’t Fake It” along with some of her other songs. I can’t wait to see Skye’s sure ascent into a bigger artist.
