The Junior Varsity golf team cut it close Wednesday at the JV invitational at Stagg Hill when it won the tournament by one stroke.

“A lot of the guys played very well; a couple guys wished they could have played better but that’s always the case,” J.V. golf coach Craig Ackerman said. “But we had a solid top four there and that’s where you get your team score. Four guys who really put up some low numbers for themselves and really gave the team a chance to win it.”

Freshmen Chase Dillon and Ben Robben lead the team off shooting 80 and 86, while sophomore Dustin Wichmann and junior Tanner Sanders shot 88 to round out the team scoring at the tournament.

“The thing that impressed me most about Ben’s score was he shot 46 on the front nine but came back with a 40 on the back nine,” Ackerman said. “So [he] improved by six strokes on the back nine, which anytime you can have that significant of an improvement over a nine, that’s really helpful.”

The team will compete Thursday at Cypress Ridge for the Seaman Invitational. The Varsity squad competed last night at the Topeka Country club and will compete Friday at Hutchinson.

“I hope we can keep playing to that level for the rest of the season we can have a good season if we can keep playing to that level,” Ackerman said.
