College for a day educates students on experience

Business, engineering and other majors at Kansas State University were the focus of the college-for-a-day field trip for Manhattan High students last week.

Kenyan exchange student Rael Omondi felt that while KSU was not quite the place for her college plans, the trip helped with figuring out her future.

“Academically it was a strong college [but] they did not have a nursing program and I will be moving out of the United States soon,” Omandi said.

MHS has the advantage of being a few blocks away from KSU and many students are familiar with parts of the campus. Sophomore Jalyn Kirk spoke of the business experience of the trip.

“I wanted to see what college life was like, how the major goes and how the system goes,” Kirk said. “I actually learned what majoring in business was like. I met a lot of people with the same background that I do and listened to their stories.”

While there, students underwent tasks involving certain subjects.

“This guy was talking about how his job involved building and stuff like that, and I guess in his building if he does his calculations wrong or if something is unstable, technically he can kill people,” Kirk said. “So we did little activities building things, making sure things are stable.”

Senior Hasan Saleem found KSU to be a good cultural experience, with the diversity of campus being quite vast.

“I felt that it was a good starting college,” Saleem said. “The business activities were helpful and understandable.”

After work was done, the students got the opportunity to have fun at Call Hall for ice cream.
