Serenade concert takes place
February 1, 2016
After nearly a month of student preparation, Manhattan High’s Serenade concert finally arrived. The concert was almost entirely directed by members of MHS choirs, leaving students to not only prepare pieces on their own but also to advertise.
After all the hard work and preparation, the night went smoothly, raising over $700 before any group had even sung a note. With this money the choirs pay for transportation to events, pieces, and other things throughout the year. The night ended with members from every choir coming together to sing a medley of songs from the musical “Les Miserables.”
“That was a seriously wonderful piece,” sophomore and Varsity Choir member Trenton Lopez said. “The only problem was that there were only 10 tenors in a group of over 200 students on stage. That presents an interesting issue where you have 10 tenors lined up in front of the horde that are screaming their parts and getting blasted by the spotlight.”
Despite the imbalance of tones, Lopez reports that the piece still went off without a hitch.
“I think we did well, I think the crowd really liked the fact that we did a medley of pieces from a popular musical,” Lopez said. “I heard a little bit of the performance and we did really well on pronunciation and finding our pitch.”
