Forensics takes over Silver Lake

Heading to Silver Lake this past weekend, the Manhattan High School Forensics team once again competed against other high school students from all over Kansas.

Most of the MHS competitors were able to break and place in all the competitions represented in the tournament. Sophomore Douglas Kim won sixth in Prose Interpretation, senior Cathy Lei placed third in Domestic Extemporaneous and fourth in Original Oration, and freshmen Creighton Glasscock and Jack Laswell won third in Duo Interpretation. Sophomore Lily Colburn also received fifth place in International Extemporaneous, sixth in Impromptu and third in Informative.

“[We did] fairly well,” sophomore Lily Colburn said. “We didn’t place in sweeps but individually everyone did pretty well.”

Senior Toula Sweeney also received first in Humorous Interpretation while seniors Caitlyn Rusk and Michaela Hayes placed second and third respectively.

“I got first … I mean, it’s better than second,” Sweeney said. “I’d say three better than second … is how I, like, feel.”

Despite the success that students had during the tournament, there was still a need for improvement that was recognized.

“Well, if we can get enough people out at the same time and … have all the people that are, like, breaking consistently get out the same days, [we could make sweeps],” Rusk said.
