Reasons why the South will never rise again
April 12, 2016
- There has been an incredible amount of innovation as far as civil rights are concerned so enslaving a race of people would be nearly impossible.
- The South no longer has the upper hand as far as military leadership goes. It is also highly unlikely that any high ranking military personnel would join the separatists since it is not overweight southern gentlemen giving them a paycheck.
- On the same note of the military, if there would be another civil war, the militia forces would be facing the full force of the most technologically-advanced army in the world and its allies.
- They largely don’t have the cash crops that they had originally so funding the war effort would be difficult. It is also way easier for other states to cease relations entirely.
- There is largely no reason for another secession. Nothing for a group of people to stand behind. Motivation and morale wins wars, and the Southern side would have neither of those.
- Although the civil war was the bloodiest war in American history, warfare has been even more revolutionized since then. The loss of life would be catastrophic not only military- wise but with civilians as well.
- There is significantly more diplomacy that goes on in the government today than during the 1860’s, so the overall chance of secession at all is very minimal.
- Those in favor of a succession are a minority of right wing Republicans.
- We have hopefully learned that a civil war is catastrophically destructive on the homefront.
- There would be considerably more states in the “Union” than in the new confederacy.
- Thanks to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, multiple countries would also go to war with the new confederacy.
- The south would no longer have the homefield advantage. The forests that were used as opportune sniping locations have almost entirely cleared.
- The movie “Glory” depicted a black regiment during the civil war and the bravery that they had shown. Not only this, but almost the entirety of the regiment was slaughtered by confederate troops. Since it is based directly off of a true story, it spreads the idea that no group of people should be segregated or led into the slaughter.
- The Red Badge of Courage is a book similar in its anti-war principle to Erich Maria Remarque’s book “All Quiet on the Western Front”. It depicts a young boy going to war for the Union Army and as he witnesses the true carnage of war, he flees. Because of this, he desperately searches for a way to get injured as validation for his cowardice. The book is known for being intensely realistic. This book has been read since the early 20th century and shows the true brutality of the American Civil War.
