Movies to send shivers down your spine

“Insidious Chapter One”: Out of the trilogy, the first “Insidious” brings the most sinister atmosphere and best scares. The story revolves around a family that starts to experience paranormal occurrences. After bringing in a psychic, she reveals that it is not the house that is haunted, it is the couple’s son that is harboring a dangerous spirit. A solid story matched with excellent scares brings a terrifying Halloween movie.

“The Babadook”: This movie is equal parts strange and scary. Following the story of a widow and her son with behavioral issues, the child finds a strange picture book on his bookshelf titled “The Babadook” illustrating a unsettling man in a trench coat and top hat who emerges from a child’s closet. After reading the book, the family starts to fall apart as the child’s behavior deteriorates and the mother’s mental state fades as a malevolent presence takes residence in their home.

“Army of Darkness”: The third movie in the “Evil Dead” series, “Army of Darkness” pits protagonist Ash all the way back in the middle ages as he fights his way through the ranks of monsters and skeletons in order to get back to the present. Though somewhat of a horror movie, Army of Darkness is an all around hilarious movie with class lines such as “This! This is my boomstick,” as Ash frightens medieval citizens with his modern high powered shotgun. Cheesy, funny and full of gore, Army of Darkness is definitely a good pick for a fun halloween movie.

“Saw Franchise”: Some of the hardest movies to watch, the “Saw” movies are composed of body horror and harsh social commentary amidst the blatant slaughter of human beings. The story is centered around the meticulous “Jigsaw Killer” and his traps and mechanisms that he uses to punish those who he views take life for granted and do not appreciate what they have. The victims are tasked with escaping from the traps, which always involves extreme pain and bodily mutilation in order to do so. If they don’t escape within the time limit, the trap deploys some sort of method to kill the victim.

“Dead Snow 2”: What’s better than regular zombies? That’s right, Nazi zombies. Nothing quite beats the sight of zombified versions of the Third Reich as they wreak havoc on a tired Swedish town. The story centers around the sole survivor of the previous Dead Snow. After chainsawing his own arm off to prevent the spread of the zombie infection, he winds up in an unfortunate series of events that leads him having a zombie’s arm sewed into the stump of his old one. Upon discovering that the arm grants him inhuman strength, he makes it his duty to take on the undead menace.

“Tucker and Dale Vs Evil”: A parody of multiple horror movie cliches, this movie focuses on two kind, if a bit dumb, rednecks who are taking a trip out to their newly purchased lakeside cabin. Sounds nice, right? However, a group of college kids convinces themselves that the two rednecks are cold-blooded serial killers. Funny, but not scary in the slightest, this movie is a good one to put on if your halloween party consists of you and a bag of candy alone.
