Local schools unconcerned in Indian mascot debate
December 5, 2016
As the final decision nears for the Indian mascot, many people in the community of Manhattan are watching Manhattan High School to await the outcome. But the controversy does not seem to reach outside of the Manhattan community.
Across the country, there are several schools who share a common mascot with MHS. Three schools that our district shares relationship with have the exact same mascot: Shawnee Mission North, Hays High School and Wamego High School.
“I honestly had no idea that Manhattan was looking at changing the Mascot. I will be very interested to see what the outcome is.” Wamego High School Principal Chad Brecheisen said.
All three schools shared a common theme. None had heard any information about the current discussions on retiring the mascot and none had any interest or concern about their very own mascots even if ours does in fact change.
“We have not had any recent conversations about our mascot and making any changes. I was unaware that your district is looking at possible making a change.” David Tappan, Principle of Shawnee Mission North, said.
