The Indians Varsity boys bowled themselves to last place while the Varsity girls bowled themselves to another second place Monday at Little Apple Lanes.

For the Varsity boys category, Shawnee Heights placed first scoring 2,612 points, Junction City taking second place with 2,584 points and only bringing five players compared to the usual six, Emporia coming in third with 2,418 points and Manhattan placing fourth with 2,026 points.

“I think the boys will continue to grow,” head coach Robert Regan said. “I think they will get some second place finishes in there before the end of the season, and I think the girls will get a few first place finishes. They have had three second place finishes and were only six pins aways from getting first place.”

For the girls Varsity category, Junction City took first place scoring 2,242 bringing five players. Manhattan took second with 2,059 points, Shawnee Heights took third with 1,949 and Emporia placing fourth with 1,904 points.

“Yeah, it was expected,” junior Nathaniel Chaput said. “I was hoping I would break 200s twice but that didn’t happen.”

Chaput was the highest-scoring player for the MHS Varsity team who scored a total of 603 (166-180-257) ranking him ninth in the Varsity boys category. Behind him was sophomore Michael Moran, who scored a total of 505 (190-169-146) ranking him 17th.

“I was hoping to shoot a little bit higher,” sophomore Alex Newell said,“but as good as I did today I thought I did very well and I was happy with it.”

Newell was the highest-scoring girl, scoring a total of 539 (166-159-214) ranking her fourth in the Varsity girls category, followed by junior Emily Willi who scored 537 (166-175-199) and ranked fifth overall.

“I’ve been working on turning my hand over and standing up taller and that’s my main focus to get better at,” Newell said.

Spares and corners played a big part in missing some pins for the Varsity girls, which is something the team plans to work on in practice in preparation for their next meet. Their next meet is next Monday at Little Apple Lanes.
