Choi, Wilcoxsin crowned
October 3, 2017
Every year during Homecoming two special individuals get chosen by their peers to be the fall Homecoming king and queen. The crowning happens during halftime of the football Homecoming game with each individual candidate being introduced on the field in front of fans in the stands. They put on their best outfit s and biggest smiles not to mention the fun handshakes each ‘couple’ does. The candidates are juniors and seniors, ranging from athletes to Student Council representatives and participants in the fall play.
The Homecoming court was filled with great candidates. However, the official fall Homecoming king was senior Ben Choi. He was on the court because of how well he plays on the soccer field for the boys team and also for StuCo. Choi has played varsity soccer all four years of high school and is one of the captains this year along with being in National Honors Society, one year of StuCo and a member of the Spanish Club. Upon his name being announced for winning, a lot of senior boys stood up cheering for him.
“I was surprised because this is my first time ever getting nominated for this kind of event,” Choi said. “I try to make everyone feel welcomed and I think people voted for me for that.”
The fall Homecoming queen this year was senior Raegan Wilcoxson. She was nominated due to being in Tribe and on Varsity volleyball. Wilcoxson played J.V. sophomore year and played Varsity junior and senior years. In addition, over the past four years, she has partaken in NHS, Interpersonal Skills, cheer and softball.
“It was a good feeling because it’s your student body voting for you,” Wilcoxson said. “To just know that you’re well liked and a positive influence around school.”
The process of picking the king and queen is not the most difficult. Tribe starts out by having the seniors vote.
“We have preliminary voting that narrows down the top 9 girls and boys with the most votes only voted by the senior class,” Megan Klug, senior co-president of Tribe said.
Once it is narrowed down, the student body votes for king and queen during advisory. Tribe figures out who wins by who has the most number of votes. Then, during halftime of the Homecoming football game, each candidate is announced. At the end, the fall king and queen’s names are announced and their crowns get placed on top of their heads.
