Soccer improves within Wichita Titan Tournament
September 10, 2014
The Manhattan High boys soccer team has competed in the Wichita Titan Tournament every year. While they’ve never won the tournament, the boys brought back two victories. After graduating many of last year’s seniors and acquiring those new to the team, the boys faced many challenges going into the beginning of the season. Starting out at the practices, the team had trouble with the speed of the plays but picked it up with the few before the tournament. MHS struggled with keeping possession of the ball during the first game and putting the ball in the back of the net when given the chance.
“After the first game, we did better,” senior Adam Hupp said. “It was a wake up call for us.”
The team looked at their mistakes and soon after realized how to accomplish more for the future games.
After enduring a groin injury, senior Jordan Disberger was benched temporarily so he could recover during the game against Dodge City. Planning to stay out until overtime, he returned to the game with three minutes left on the clock. After a tug-of-war, Dodge City and MHS had with the ball on the field. Manhattan pulled enough to where the ball made it to the other team’s goal, put in by Disberger.
“The ball ricochet off some people and went in,” Disberger said. “I turned around and ran across the field to our goalkeeper [junior Wesley Whitney] and just hugged him.”
Manhattan also triumphed against Hutchinson with by a score of 3-1.
