Golf swings to first at Salina, nabs first tournament win
September 15, 2014
The Manhattan High girls golf team pulled out its first win of the season last Tuesday at the Salina Municipal golf tournament. The team scored a 169, followed by Hays whose team shot a 174.
The top scorers for Manhattan included senior Kylie McCarthy with a 40 to take second, freshman Macie Myers with 41 to take third, and senior Kelsey McCarthy shot a 42, taking fifth. There was a strong feeling that the tournament could’ve scored better.
“This one particular hole I did bad on which would’ve given me the lead or would’ve made me win the tournament,” Kelsey said. “But it was a good learning experience.”
The wind from the storms made it so the players had to change the way they played.
“[The wind] made the putting more challenging than usual as you’re trying to maintain a solid base and then find yourself getting blown around by the wind,” head coach Chris George said.
The girls ended up shooting higher than they expected.
“I was kind of disappointed in myself because I honestly thought I was going to win, because I did last year,” Kylie said.
The girls were presented with multiple chip shots, shots that are near the green.
“Our chipping wasn’t bad, but we didn’t have enough up and downs to score where we wanted to as a team,” George said.
At the end of the tournament the girls played strongly.
“Getting me second place, I made a 50-foot putt for birdie on number nine which made me really, really happy and I really wanted to go play another nine, because the last three holes I was on my game,” Kylie said.
The girls played well through the tournament and it payed off at the end.
“I was happy overall with our performance though as half of our team score came from ladies who have only competed in two varsity tournaments,” George said.
The Junior Varsity girls have a tournament at 3 p.m. on Thursday in Salina.
