Golf takes second, freshman moves up from J.V.

The Manhattan High girls golf team took second at the Hutch Invitational in Carey Park losing by one stroke to Maize south who shot 335.
“We had four freshmen on the squad [Thursday] and probably had some decisions that could have been smarter,” Varsity golf coach Chris George said. “Losing first place by one stroke goes to show how important it is that everyone on the team maintains their focus for the entire round,”
At the tournament senior Kylie McCarthy shot a 77 to get third place, freshman Macie Myers shot a 78 to get fifth, senior Kelsey McCarthy shot an 82 to finish 10th, freshman Katie Ochoa shot a 99, freshman Delaney Wisdom shot a 109 and freshman Isabella Hager shot a 113.
Myers earned a special medal for shooting the best score of the freshmen from all the schools at the tournament.
“She was very consistent off the tee and managed to stay out of any trouble,” George said.
Another freshman who stood out at the tournament from Manhattan was Hager, who made her first start on varsity this year.
“I was excited yet nervous because I was happy I was getting a chance to actually do it,” Hager said. “And I was nervous because I knew that there was girls who’ve been playing for years and this is my first official team year.”
Despite the good things at the tournament the weather was gusty and it started to rain at the tournament later on during the day.
“I think the wind affected my game a bit, it would push the ball either to the right or to the left at least not straight,” Hager said.
There was also a struggle on the green.
“Even putting I noticed my ball wouldn’t move over,” freshman Katie Ochoa said.
The tournament was still seen as a success for the team despite the loss.
“There were a couple of situations in which knowing the rules a little better would have enabled a higher percentage shot, but that’s part of the learning curve,” George said.
The golf team will next be competing at Stagg Hill in Manhattan for Regionals on Monday.
