Nick Jonas brings new, nostalgic music to K-State
April 17, 2018
Just 13 short years ago, young girls’ hearts were stolen by the famed Jonas Brothers on Disney Channel. Now, even after the brothers’ band breakup, Nick Jonas is still stealing hearts on stage.
The K-State Union Program Council sponsored a concert featuring Nick Jonas at Bramlage Coliseum on April 12 which was made possible by the College Entertainment Fund.
“I think Bramlage was a perfect place to hold this concert,” senior Lydia Fry said. “The bass, and lighting was well-done and there wasn’t a bad seat in the place.”
Through K-State, students are able to purchase tickets for events at a discounted price before sales are opened to the public.
The concert started at 8 p.m. with an opening act by English-born Australian musician Jess Kent. Kent performed songs from her EP, “My Name Is Jess Kent.”
“I would definitely listen to her music again,” senior Sina Hanna said. “She had a really good stage presence and I liked how she got the whole crowd involved.”
After Kent concluded her set and the stage was reset, Jonas quickly captured the attention of the audience by opening with his third top ten hit on Mainstream Top 40, “Close.”
While the set list was jam-packed with Jonas’ newest hits, he also surprised the crowd by playing some of his older songs. Current high school and college girls were the generation that grew up listening to Nick Jonas’ music while he was a part of the Jonas Brothers.
The second he strummed the first few chords of “Lovebug,” a song released during the Jonas Brothers era, the entire venue erupted in screaming.
My favorite part was when he sang older songs,” senior Maiesha Hossain said. “The whole place lit up and it was very nostalgic.”
Because of the overwhelming response to ”Lovebug,” Jonas decided mid-concert to switch up the set-list to include even more of his older music, including “Gotta Find You” from “Camp Rock” and “Introducing Me” from “Camp Rock 2.”
“People around us were screaming and dancing and just having a great time,” Fry said. “I thought it was super cool that he changed his set list for us so that he could play ‘Gotta Find You’ and ‘Introducing Me.’”
About mid-concert, Jonas took a small break from performing to have a chat with the audience. He talked about how his future didn’t quite go the way he thought it would, but sometimes you just need to go with the flow.
“I almost went to school to study English and try to play baseball, but my life took a different turn,” Jonas said.
To conclude his concert, Jonas rocked out on-stage, singing his first top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, “Jealous.”
“I was a huge Jonas Brothers fan growing up,” Hossain said, “But I also loved them individually when the band split. Seeing one of them live was a dream come true.”
